MEDIA PRESS RELEASE

BBC TWO COMMISSIONS SPECIAL ON BAFTA FELLOW JULIE WALTERS FROM WHIZZ KID ENTERTAINMENT AND BAFTA PRODUCTIONS

London September 22nd 2014

Multi-award winning actress and BAFTA Fellow Julie Walters will be the subject of an hour-long in-depth TV special commissioned by BBC Two.  Co-produced by Whizz Kid Entertainment and BAFTA Productions, the programme comes in the wake of Julie being awarded the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship in May 2014.

The programme entitled Julie Walters: In Their Words (working title) will celebrate the actress’s incredible career spanning over 40 years in a multitude of film and TV roles.   From her comedy beginnings in theatre, through to television and then into film, her story will be told through the eyes of Julie’s colleagues and friends as well as an in-depth interview with the actress herself.

With archive from TV comedy classics such as Wood & Walters and Dinnerladies to breakthrough award-winning films like ‘Educating Rita’ and popular box office hits like ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Billy Elliot’ the actress’s career has been nothing short of exceptional.

Much-loved by the public and critics alike, the film will explore Julie’s professional partnerships and relationships offering insight into how as an actress she works with her co-stars and in an ensemble cast, and how she approaches roles as diverse as Mo Mowlam (in the award-winning Mo) to her sing-along wisecracking author Rosie in ‘Mama Mia’.

The programme was commissioned by Kim Shillinglaw, Controller of BBC Two and Suzanne McManus, commissioning editor for BBC Entertainment and will be Produced and Directed by biog specialist Samantha Peters whose previous credits include: Agnetha: Abba & After (BBC One), Jools Holland: A Life In Music (BBC Two) and Imagine: Bette Midler (BBC One).  Executive Producers are Katherine Allen (Whizz Kid Entertainment) and Clare Brown (BAFTA Productions).

Suzanne McManus, Commissioning Editor for BBC Entertainment says: “Julie has been an acting hero of mine since I first saw her light up the screen in ‘Educating Rita’. I’ve been known to hijack her at events and tell her, more than once! She’s so loved by her fellow actors, so I’m looking forward to hearing their inside stories and having Julie back on our screens.”

Katherine Allen, Executive Producer Whizz Kid Entertainment, comments:
Whizz Kid Entertainment have enjoyed critical success with our award-winning documentary Jools Holland: A Life in Music and we are looking forward to producing another high-end and must-see biographical piece with such a notable and well-loved actress.”

Clare Brown, Director of Production,  BAFTA Productions, comments:
BAFTA Productions is delighted to have the opportunity to make this programme exploring why this BAFTA Fellow has received so many awards for her huge body of work in film and television.
