BBC commissions third series of Let’s Dance from Whizz Kid Entertainment

BBC ONE has commissioned Whizz Kid Entertainment (WKE) to produce a third series of the hugely popular celebrity-led series Let’s Dance… for Comic Relief.

Let’s Dance sees well known celebrities pay homage to some of the world’s most iconic dance routines in front of a live studio audience. The stars battle it out each week in a bid to wow viewers with their moves and secure a place in the grand final. Claudia Winkleman and Steve Jones will once more be co-hosting the run.

Last series, UK comedian Rufus Hound danced his way to the winner’s podium of Let’s Dance for Sport Relief, with a show-stopping performance of Cheryl Coles’ ‘Fight for this Love’. The 4-part series won its slot each week with the finale peaking at an impressive 8 million viewers in its 7pm Saturday night slot.

Malcolm Gerrie, CEO, Whizz Kid Entertainment, said: “We are extremely excited to be producing a third series of Let’s Dance for BBC ONE and Comic Relief. In the long tradition of the charity, it’s great fun, full of laughs but is all for a serious cause. I didn’t think anyone could top Robert Webb’s Flashdance in series one but then along came Rufus Hound – now I’ve no doubt there is a very worthy successor to the two of them already waiting in the wings…”

Jo Wallace, Executive Editor, BBC Entertainment Commissioning, added: The last two series of “Let’s Dance for…have captured the hearts of the nation, bringing them a Saturday night show brimming with entertaining, jaw dropping and comical performances from a host of celebrities, all in the name of charity. It is a pleasure to have the series returning to our screens as part of a fantastic line up of programmes for Comic Relief 2011.”

Kevin Cahill, CEO, Comic Relief, said: “Let’s Dance was undoubtedly one of the big highlights of the Red Nose Day 2009 and Sport Relief 2010 campaigns, and I’m delighted that it’s back for a third series. Each year the artists taking part put everything into their jaw-dropping performances and we are confident the public will be both entertained and inspired to donate to Red Nose Day 2011.”

Let’s Dance is a Whizz Kid Entertainment production for BBC ONE. It will be directed by Richard Valentine, series produced by Barbara Lee and executive produced by Malcolm Gerrie, Lisa Chapman and Antonia Hurford–Jones for Whizz Kid Entertainment. Jo Wallace commissioned the series for BBC ONE and Comic Relief.

Channel 4 commissions Christmas Special and Second Series of Being…N-Dubz from Whizz Kid Entertainment

Channel 4 has commissioned Whizz Kid Entertainment to produce both a Christmas special and a second series of ratings hit Being…N-Dubz (6×30’).

The first series gave audiences unprecedented access to the daily lives of the members of million selling, multi platinum pop act act N-Dubz. After its successful run on Channel 4, 4Music and Kiss, it regularly out performed against its slot average.

Ground breaking and cutting edge Ð this is the ultimate form of reality TV using state of the art Point of View filming. You can’t get any closer to a celebrity than actually standing in their shoes, seeing the world through their eyes. In Being…N-Dubz you become them.

Series One followed the highs and lows of the band, as they embarked on a busy summer of recording, promoting and performing. Notable highs included their headline set at the legendary Glastonbury Festival, plus their performance at the prestigious Mad Music Awards in Greece. The series also successfully captured the raw energy and close family bond the band enjoy, extending to regular rows and honest accounts of what it is to be one of the UK’s most talked about bands.

After the success of the first series, we continue on our journey with N-Dubz with a 1 hour Christmas Special. We will follow the band as they prepare for the release of their new album: ‘Love. Life. Life’ released date of November 29th. The Observer recently referred to the band as ‘Britain’s most culturally relevant group’ / ‘voice of today’s youth’.

Highlights will include the dynamic trio presenting and performing at the MOBO’s where they won Best Song for ‘Playing With Fire’, a performance at T4 Stars of 2010, as well as seeing the more intimate side of the band as they prepare for Christmas.

Series two will begin filming in early 2011.

Malcolm Gerrie, Chief Executive, Whizz Kid Entertainment, said: “We are thrilled with the success achieved by the first series of Being…N-Dubz and are delighted to be working with Channel 4 on the special and second run. The series became one of the most talked about shows of the summer — the unique head-cam technology allowing audiences to see the fantastic world of Dappy, Fazer, and Tulisa through their very own eyes. Series Two has even more surprises in store!”

Neil McCallum, Commissioning Editor T4, Youth and Music added: “Being…N-Dubz was a huge success and gave our viewers a fascinating insight into the working and personal lives of one of the UK’s hottest, musical acts. This compelling, headline grabbing, TV show was as a result of incredible access, state of the art technology and a band that are simply brilliant at being themselves. We’re delighted that Dappy, Tulisa and Fazer are back on board for the Christmas Special and a second series. And we can’t wait to once again join them as they take us along for what looks set to be an entertaining ride.”

Being…N-Dubz…at Christmas is a Whizz Kid Entertainment production for Channel 4. It will be series produced by Jaime Brannan and executive produced by Katherine Allen and Malcolm Gerrie for Whizz Kid Entertainment and Jonathan Shalit and Rich Castillo for ROAR Global. Neil McCallum and Cath Lovesey commissioned the series for Channel 4.

Rufus Hound is the Let’s Dance For Sport Relief Champion – 2010!

Rufus Hound has fought his way to victory in the grand finale of Let’s Dance For Sport Relief, following a show-stopping performance of Fight For This Love.

After the viewers were treated to an almighty dance off between the six finalists – Rufus Hound (Fight For This Love), Katy Brand (Single Ladies), Kate Garraway and Richard Arnold (Born To Hand Jive), Debra Stephenson (Smooth Criminal), Cheryl Fergison (Ice Ice Baby) and The Grumpy Old Women (Poker Face), presenters Claudia Winkleman and Steve Jones announced that the viewers had chosen Rufus Hound as their favourite and the show’s champion.

However, in a night of high drama, Cheryl Fergison had to pullout of dancing live on the show, when she pulled a muscle during rehearsals earlier in the evening. A recording of her performance from last week was shown instead, enabling viewers to phone in and vote for her.

After his win Rufus Hound thanked his choreographers saying: “They’ve been amazing, very patient. It’s not easy getting a fat lad to move like this. So they’ve done a heck of a job!”

Following Rufus’ performance, last year’s winner and finale panellist, Robert Webb said: “It almost goes without saying you are more compelling and watchable than Cheryl Cole. However, what you’ve also added is a costume that clearly hurts – in my experience the British public respects that!”

Impressionist, John Culshaw commented: “I was loving that like the audience. I’m a great fan of your work anyway, I think you’re a brilliant comedian on Argumental and all the shows you do. Brilliant attitude that went over into the dance and (in the voice of Simon Cowell) – I think Simon Cowell would be very happy with the beautiful tribute you paid to his Cheryl. I thought that was very deeply moving – it’s three yeses!”

Comedian, Jack Dee followed with: “Rufus, Rufus Hound. You are a hound. That was world class and you’ve given us my mojo back. Can I just say, this is a charity, when you take that leotard off could you please incinerate it! Well done. It was very good.”

Following the hand-over of the Let’s Dance trophy by last year’s champion, Robert Webb, viewers’ favourite Rufus Hound then closed the series in style with a memorable encore of their homage to Fight For This Love.

Tonight’s show also included performances from N-Dubz, with their latest single, Playing With Fire and the cast of Billy Elliot performing Expressing Yourself

Ice-cool Cheryl Fergison and the gaga Grumpy Old Women through to the final in week three of Let’s Dance For Sport Relief!

Eastender, Cheryl Fergison and The Grumpy Old Women, Lesley Joseph, Susie Blake, Linda Robson and Jenny Éclair have strutted their stuff straight into next Saturday’s final of Let’s Dance For Sport Relief, following their show-stopping performances in the third and last heat of the series.

Presenters Claudia Winkleman and Steve Jones announced that the viewers had chosen Cheryl Fergison as their favourite, the fifth act to win a place in the final on Saturday 13th March after performing an exceptional homage to Ice Ice Baby.

An astonished Cheryl Fergison said: “It’s brilliant. Thank you everyone who’s voted. All these guys (her backing dancers) they are just fantastic. We’ve had a ball. It’s been brilliant!”

Runners up Grumpy Old Women and The Footballers then faced the three panellists who decided which act would win the sixth and last place in the final after their performances of Poker Face and Men in Black respectively. Panellist Jo Brand voted for The Grumpy Old Women. Next up, Vic Reeves also gave his vote to The Grumpy Old Women – automatically awarding them the last place in the final. Following Cheryl’s performance Jo Brand said: “It was nice to see a bit of hip-hop as opposed to hip replacement in our house. Well done. It was bang on the money. It was fantastic! I am a hip-hop artist as you probably know. My hip-hop name is Big Smalls. It was brilliant. Fantastic. Loved it!”

Vic Reeves followed with: “It was fantastic! I love Cheryl. I’ve got posters of Cheryl all over my bedroom. A nice use of the Double Plum Roll and the American Chutney Dash. I enjoyed that one!” Denise Van Outen said: “And The Caterpillar (dance move) was absolutely fantastic. I think you’ve raised the bar tonight. It was very good.”

Following a rather energetic performance of Poker Face, Grumpy Old Woman, Jenny Éclair, said: “I’m not sure if it’s possible for women to have hernias, but I think I may have just had one. I’m spitting bits of wig and I went horribly wrong. We went a bit gaga ladies there and forgot it halfway through.” Viewers’ favourite Cheryl Fergison closed the show with an encore of her hilarious tribute to Ice Ice Baby.

Tonight’s show was the third of three heats and saw performances from Stephen K Amos (Rhythm of Life, Sammy Davis Jr), Cheryl Fergison (Ice Ice Baby, Vanilla Ice), Sally Rogers & Chris Simmons (Hips Don’t Lie, Shakira / Wyclef Jean), Jason Cundy & Peter Shilton (Men in Black, Will Smith), Felix Dextor, Lucy Montgomery & Rhys Thomas (Rasputin, Boney M) and Lesley Joseph, Susie Blake, Linda Robson & Jenny Éclair (Poker Face, Lady Gaga).

There were also performances from the cast of Chicago and Justin Bieber. Next week, the six celebrity finalists Rufus Hound (Fight For This Love), Katy Brand (Single Ladies), Kate Garraway and Richard Arnold (Born To Hand Jive), Debra Stephenson (Smooth Criminal), Cheryl Fergison (Ice Ice Baby) and The Grumpy Old Women (Poker Face) will take to the dance-floor for their chance to wow the viewers in one almighty dance off. Only one will be crowned the Let’s Dance For Comic Relief Champion on Saturday 13 March on BBC One, 7.00pm.
