Channel 4 commission Independents Day series

Channel 4 has commissioned Tough Cookie, part of Whizz Kid Entertainment, to produce a fourpart music entertainment series as part of Independents Day, a new initiative from Association of Independent Music (AIM) to celebrate 50 years of independently released music.

The series commissioned by Neil McCallum, Commissioning Editor, T4, Youth and Music at Channel 4, will include in-depth interviews and performances by big-name artists who made their names through the independent scene covering their favourite songs for a double CD. The series will be filmed at a specially organised Independents Day 08 gig at London’s Cargo and broadcast in early July. Artists already confirmed include Futureheads, Maximo Park, The Charlatans and Feeder.

Central to the initiative is the release of a double CD. CD1 features well known artists covering their favourite independently released songs. CD2 includes a selection of new and upcoming acts, as chosen by the acts featured on CD1. The event will raise awareness of the importance of independently released music across the globe, and will raise money for the independent music community and their chosen charities.

Malcolm Gerrie, Chief Executive, Whizz Kid Entertainment, says: “We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting initiative and important debut fixture in the music industry calendar. Independent record labels are the lifeblood of music. Without it, and the likes of Island Records taking risks to find talent, there is a good chance that the world would never have heard artists such as Bob Marley or U2. These programmes will showcase and celebrate the legacy and also capture the talent and energy which is independent music.”

In addition MTV 2 will also be airing seven hours of music videos from 10 independent labels, which will be followed by a 120 minute Independents Day special feature. XFM are programming label documentaries, which will air over the weekend of 4th July and will include interviews with key independent music industry representatives and artists. An auction of music memorabilia will also run on eBay.

From the conception of Island Records in 1958 independent labels have long played a vital role in UK music. The likes of Chrysalis, Rough Trade, Factory, Beggars, Mute, and more recently XL Recordings, Domino, Warp, Wichita, Dance To The Radio and many others have often led the way in terms of both new talent and sales. Recent independent successes have included four Mercury Music Prize wins in a row (2003 – 2006), a quarter of all available prizes at the 2008 Brit Awards and the independent sector regularly accounts for 30% of all UK artist album awards (silver, gold, platinum/multi-platinum) and 27.5% of world music sales.

The initiative will raise money for a number of beneficiaries. In the UK, Independents Day 08 is raising money for charities C.A.L.M The Campaign Against Living Miserably, a charity helping with the issue of suicide amongst young men and The Musicians Benevolent Fund (MBF) which provides help and support to musicians and their dependants and those in related occupations when illness, accident or old age brings stress or financial burdens.

Nokia and Whizz Kid Unite for C4 Commission

Nokia and Whizz Kid Entertainment are collaborating with Channel 4 to launch a new music entertainment television format and series called The Nokia Green Room.

The Nokia Green Room will run for 15 weeks on Channel 4 from April. The programme will play out twice in T4 over the weekend and as a late night repeat as part of 4Music, with exclusive tracks and out-takes available on Nokia mobile devices and via the Nokia Music Store. The series establishes a groundbreaking new format that combines live music performances with reality- style observational TV.

The 30-minute programmes will mix contemporary but diverse music acts together in “The Nokia Green Room”, a specially created backstage area with hidden mics and remote cameras filming the interaction between acts as they wait to perform live on stage.

The series will be co-funded by Nokia and Channel 4 and produced by Whizz Kid Entertainment. Whizz Kid’s digital arm, Tough Cookie, will produce the additional interviews, performances and teasers for download exclusively to Nokia mobile devices and for the Nokia Music Store.

The deal was brokered by Malcolm Gerrie, Chief Executive at Whizz Kid Entertainment, with Nokia’s Will Harris and planning agency MediaCom. Whizz Kid Entertainment have been commissioned by Nokia to repackage the show for broadcast in their key international territories. This will be handled by Precious Media, the content exploitation company acquired by Whizz Kid Entertainment in February 2008.

The Green Room aired as a pilot show on Channel 4 last year to strong ratings, achieving a 5.8% share with over 600,000 viewers, and featured Girls Aloud, The Feeling and Orson.

Malcolm Gerrie, Chief Executive, Whizz Kid Entertainment, commented: “I believe this collaboration represents the way in which branded content will be created in the future, with the production company at the heart of the creative process. Not only do we understand the needs of the broadcasters we also understand how to extend that content onto other media channels for brand partners too. A deal like this needs progressive companies like Nokia and Channel 4 and we are thrilled to be at the centre of such a collaboration.”

Will Harris of Nokia, said: “In the development of our services portfolio, we’re actively driving revenue across the business and breaking new ground in all of our marketing and promotional activities. The fusion of reality TV, live music and mobile promises to be a heady mix. This is a fascinating project and we are very excited to be associated with it.”

Neil McCallum, Commissioning Editor, T4, Youth & Music at Channel 4, commented: The Nokia Green Room is an exciting new development for music television, combining fantastic artist access (and interaction) with beautifully shot performances. Plus the shows format and varied booking policy will mean no two weeks will be the same, which in itself will make a varied and unpredictable series!.”

Commenting on the show from the record company perspective, Rob Wells, SVP, Digital for Universal Music Group International, says: “The Nokia Green Room is a great concept which I’m certain will be a huge success. I’m delighted to be involved in this launch.”

While heading up Initial, Malcolm Gerrie pioneered the drive into advertiser-funded programming launching The Pepsi Chart for Five, followed soon after with projects involving brands such as Smirnoff and Lynx and most recently the Orange Playlist for ITV.

Help! I’ve Got A High Maintenance Wife

On Thursday 24th January at 22:00 Five will air their new features show Help! I’ve Got A High Maintenance Wife. The show, produced by Whizz Kid Entertainment, provides an intriguing insight into the country’s most high maintenance wives and the outrageous behaviour that drives their husbands to despair.

The show tells the extraordinary stories of four very different women, who are all undeniably high maintenance wives.

Donna Davidson is the married mother of two whose addiction to body building is tearing her family apart. High maintenance wife Karen Armstrong lives with a bizarre phobia that leaves her permanently convinced that she’s about to die. Hayley Martin’s OCD means that she spends 20 hours a day going through domestic rituals and never makes it to bed with husband Peter. And high maintenance wife Nicola McLean is the vainest woman in Britain… and she’s proud of it.

Whizz Kid’s Controller Of Entertainment Rachel Arnold said: “‘Help! I’ve Got A High Maintenance Wife features unbelievably compelling stories of ordinary women with extraordinary lives. Shocking, laughout-loud funny, and tragic in equal measure, the show offers a real perspective to anyone who thought they had a high maintenance wife.”

The format was devised by Whizz Kid’s Head of Development Nick Johns, series produced by Katie Pierce and commissioned by Head Of Features at Five, Alex Menzies.
